SGPA to Percentage Converter
SGPA to percentage calculator
A calculator is used to compute a specific value after mathematical operations. Similarly, the SGPA to percentage calculator is a tool or a specific type of calculator used to convert SGPA percentage (Semester Grade Point Average) grade points into SGPA to percentage values. These conversions are generally used in the educational field.
What is SGPA?
The full form of SGPA is Semester Grade Point Average. This grading parameter is used by institutions to rank students’ performance over a semester. SGPA is mostly used in colleges or institutions, but it is not universal for all. Therefore, a calculator to convert SGPA into percentage is often needed or required by students.
What is SGPA?
To understand SGPA, you should be aware of some basic elements of SGPA such as semester grade points and credit points.
- Semester: A semester is a 6-month period, and in contrast, academic years are generally divided into semesters for better and detailed education.
- Grade Point: Points represent the performance of students in a specific subject during the course. These points are a direct indication of students’ knowledge in that particular subject.
- Credit Points: These points represent the hours of study a student invests in a specific subject. To qualify for credit points, each student needs to spend a specific amount of time on each subject in a semester.
How to calculate SGPA?
Results for each subject are generally given based on credit points. Before converting these into percentages, a student must calculate their SGPA for a specific semester using these credit points.
Here are some simple steps to calculate SGPA for a semester:
- Write down all credit points for different subjects as shown in your performance sheet.
- Multiply the grade points of each subject by its credit points.
- Include these results in the calculation for each subject.
- Divide the result from step 3 by the total number of credit points.
- The result obtained will be your SGPA for the semester.
Example of SGPA calculation
Example 1:
Subject | Credit Point | Grade |
Subject P | 3 | 9 |
Subject Q | 2 | 8 |
Subject R | 3 | 8 |
Subject S | 2 | 7 |
Step 1: 3, 2, 3, 2
Step 2: 3 x 9 = 27, 2 x 8 = 16, 3 x 8 = 24, 2 x 7 = 14
Step 3: 27+16 + 24 + 14 = 81
Step 4: 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 10
Step 5: 81/10 = 8.1
Step 6: SGPA = 8.1
Subject | Credit Point | Grade |
Subject I | 4 | 8 |
Subject II | 3 | 8 |
Subject III | 3 | 9 |
Subject IV | 2 | 7 |
Subject V | 3 | 8 |
Subject VI | 2 | 7 |
Step 1: 4, 3, 3, 2, 3, 2
Step 2: 4 x 8 = 32, 3 x 8 = 24, 3 x 9 = 27, 2 x 7 = 14, 3 x 8 = 24, 2 x 7 = 14
Step 3: 32 + 24 + 27 + 14 + 24 + 14 = 135
Step 4: 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 17
Step 5: 135/17 = 7.94
Step 6: SGPA = 7.94
Formula to Calculate SGPA from Grade Points & Credit Points
To calculate SGPA points from the grade points of each subject in a semester, the stages mentioned can be represented through a formula as shown below.
SGPA (Si) = Σ (Ci x Gi) / Σ Ci
In this formula:
- Si represents the SGPA for the i-th semester,
- Ci represents the credit points for each subject in the i-th semester, and
Gi represents the grade points for each subject in the i-th semester.
Formula to Calculate/Convert SGPA to Percentage
For your convenience, the formula used to derive percentage values from SGPA points is provided below.
Percentage = (SGPA x 10) – 7.5
This formula can be divided into two steps for easier calculation:
Step 1: SGPA x 10
Step 2: (SGPA x 10) – 7.5
How to Convert SGPA to Percentage?
To obtain the percentage result of your qualifying course, you first need to calculate the SGPA for the semester using the points mentioned above. Include the points from all semesters to get the overall SGPA points.
Once you have the overall SGPA value, apply it to the SGPA to percentage conversion formula to get your performance grade in percentage terms.
Example of SGPA to Percentage Calculation
For better understanding, students can see the complete example provided here.
Example 1: SGPA = 8.1
- Step 1: SGPA x 10 = 8.1 x 10 = 81
- Step 2: (SGPA x 10) – 7.5 = 81 – 7.5 = 73.5%
Example 2: SGPA = 7.94
- Step 1: SGPA x 10 = 7.94 x 10 = 79.4
- Step 2: (SGPA x 10) – 7.5 = 79.4 – 7.5 = 71.9%
Letter Grade approved by UGC
According to the UGC’s guidelines, many institutions or universities are using letter grades which represent specific grade points and percentage ranges. Accepted letter grades along with their respective grade points and percentage ranges are listed below.
Percentage of Marks | Letter Grade as per UGC Guidelines | Grade Points |
90-100% | O (Outstanding) | 10 |
80-90% | A+ (Excellent) | 9 |
70-80% | A (Very Good) | 8 |
60-70% | B+ (Good) | 7 |
50-60% | B (Average) | 6 |
40-50% | C (Pass) | 5 |
Below 40% | F (Fail) | 0 |
Absent | AB | 0 |
Difference between SGPA and CGPA
CGPA is the abbreviation for Cumulative Grade Point Average, and it represents the performance of students over an academic year. Whereas SGPA is the grade for a single semester. By including all the SGPA values for each semester and then dividing by the total number of semesters, CGPA to percentage can be calculated from SGPA.
For example, if a student’s SGPA for the first and second semesters is 6 and 8, respectively, then the CGPA would be calculated as follows:
CGPA = (SGPA of Semester 1 + SGPA of Semester 2) / (Sum of Semesters)
= (6 + 8) / (1+1)
= 14 / 2
= 7
Another difference between CGPA and SGPA is that CGPA is used as a performance grading system at the school level, while SGPA is used in higher education.
